A Drink in Every Suburb

Welcome to another installment of my Beginners Guide To Joburg. You can find my intro post on settling into the city here. If you're looking for a action plan on where to explore this weekend here's a short list of some suburbs with some classic spots for you to try!

Braamfontein: Great Dane

Perfect as an afternoon into evening "no-frills" hangout after lunch at The Neighbourgoods Market. It gets very packet though so make sure to come early to secure a spot.

Details on location available here.

Bedfordview: The Baron Bedfordview

Bedfordview has many sweet spots but somehow we always navigated back to this place. Great food and a casual pub vibe for a friday evening after work.

Details on location available here.

Bryanston: Copper Bar

This little rooftop bar guarantees good drinks and good times. As a favourite after work hangout and regular host of events- Copper Bar is a real gem in the North.

Craighall: The Royale

The Royale is a hip haven for Vega Students, creative professionals - and the rest of us that can't pull off moonbags but try anyway. Don't let the refined decor and diner set up fool you. This place knows how to host a good party and has perfected the transition from dinner to drinks to dancing all in one locale.

Fourways: Big Bad Wolf in Cedar Square

It's tucked away in Cedar Square Shopping Centre and looks out onto a car park- but that's all okay because the phenomenal decor and excellent drinks selection makes BBW a haven in hot and busy Fourways. A bit pricey for the Family- Friendly Fourways area but well worth it- ask for their "off the menu" cocktails!

Illovo: Eighty Six Public & Hogshead

These are two separate bars but need to be experienced together. Start by rubbing shoulders with half of Sandton at Eighty Six and end with singing along to terrible early 2000's tunes at Hogs. You'll find it difficult to go to either of these spots without running into someone you know- and the Uni Bar vibe is all part of their appeal.

Hogshead: Illovo location available here.

Kramerville: Katy's Palace Bar

A Wednesday night at Katy's is the stuff of legends. Beautiful venue with a killer sunset view that ends with the Joburg Housewives dancing on the bar counters in their stilettos and free pouring tequila for everyone. I can't describe it any better. You just have to try it. Come early or be prepared to wait in a queue that runs into the street. Also, be thankful that it's only open one night a week as you'll need the whole week to recover from your hangover and barfoot dancing blisters.

*Covid Update* They've now expanded their offering and are open more nights a week.

Linden: Brian Lara Rum Eatery

This tropical oasis has been serving as Joburg's best day drinking chill spot since 2016 and still remains a firm favourite. A small selection of excellent food and cocktails makes this a must visit.

Melville: Smoking Kills Bar

The lesser known sibling of Melville's famous Mootee Bar which has since closed down. We ended up here by mistake one night but fell in love with the cosy and cool space. The creativity and cool cocktails are a perfect intro to the Melville scene!

Parkhurst: Hudsons

The Hudson's chain is nothing new. But its Parkhurst location, spilling out onto the tree lined 4th Avenue, is a classic introduction to the easy breezy feel of Parkhurst. A must visit if you're looking for a casual and vibey start to a Saturday night.

Parktown North: Douglas and Hale

I will never stop praising this establishment. I'll write a more detailed post about this soon but in the meantime; do yourself a favour and go check this place out. Their cocktail menu is excellent but if you're lucky enough to catch the Jack Sparrow looking chap at work, ask him for some recommendations! Cocktails inspired by your favourite film, song or mood of the moment? Nothing seems beyond the creative scope of Jesse Chin, their magic mixologist.

*Covid Update* Another favourite spot that had to close down. But you can still find Jesse next door at il Contadino.

Parkwood: Street Bar named Desire

Midweek birthday celebrations or after work drinks? Street Bar is the people's choice. Catch the sunset from the balcony bar or tuck yourself in to the beautifully decorated downstairs section. Drinks can be a bit pricey but it's worth it for a refined yet fun feel.

As mentioned this list is by no means exhaustive and these aren't the only or arguably best spots in each area. But they should make for a good start! Feel free to comment with further recommendations or spots you think we should check out.
