Covid Friendly Cafés

The new year is well underway and I'm cautiously hopeful that it's going to be better than the last. But one thing remains certain. Covid-19 is here to stay. As we wait in anticipation for the vaccines to arrive, social distancing and taking health precautions is more important than ever.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy the city in a safe and responsible way. This is a list of my favourite cafés that adhere to Covid protocols and are well ventilated so you can enjoy the Joburg sunshine while keeping yourselves and others safe. Added bonus? Provide some much-needed support to local businesses.

Glenda’s, Hyde Park

Glenda’s is an Instagramming haven in Joburg. The cafe has been around and well-loved by locals for many years. Great food, beautiful decor and, most importantly for 2021, covid-safe! There’s plenty of outdoor seating which makes this an ideal, well ventilated, stop off on a beautiful summers day.

Munch cafe, Parktown North

This little gem is hidden inside the Parktown Garden Shop on the corner of Jan Smuts. We love going here over weekends. It’s so conveniently located while still being tucked away in a tranquil and shaded corner of the city. The outdoor setting is perfect for ventilation and it’s never very busy so you can avoid the crowds. Added bonus- you can pick up some more plant babies in the nursery while you wait for your food to arrive.

The Green Room, Greenside

A relaxed and leafy environment for a family friendly afternoon out. Well priced and yummy food. Good service and an airy atmosphere following all Covid regulations.

Pebbles Restaurant and Deli

A wildly underrated cafe in the heart of Linden. This little hidden gem offers a relaxed outdoor setting with no frills food, good service and a safe way to enjoy Joburg’s beautiful weather.

La Vie En Rose, Killarney Country Club

Tucked away in the Killarney Country Club, this outdoor venue offers everything you need for a well ventilated Sunday brunch in the sunshine.

Anong Thai Restaurant, Cyrildene

The perfect inner-city getaway if you’re missing travelling and authentic Thai food. The owner is such a sweetheart. The classic Pad Thai is an absolute must-try. The restaurant is set on an open-air but shaded deck. Tables are well spread out. All Covid regulations enforced. Plus, after your meal, you can stroll down the road in Chinatown and stock up on your favourite Asian ingredient or pick up some new masks at the multiple stores specialising in PPE.

Olives & Plates, The Wits Club

Your favourite Joburg menu served at one of the city’s most elegant venues. Set at the historic Wits club, a meal here feels like you’ve taken a weekend trip to the Wine-lands. Perfect for outdoor dining.

Ground Cafe, Muldersdrif

This place is always worth the drive. Perfect for a post cycle breakfast or a morning out with your favourite book. Enjoy the beautiful gardens and socially distanced setting. Great food and service too!

The Windmill Restaurant, Hartebeespoort

Enjoy a scenic drive +- 1 hour out of the city and make a full day outing out of your trip. Have a delicious breakfast out on the open air-deck with beautiful views of the surrounding gardens. Why not do your weekly shop while you're there? You can pop into the shop downstairs for the best home baked goods and fresh ingredients.

These are only a few of my favourites, I'd love to hear your thoughts and if you have further suggestions. Let me know in the comments down below! xXx
