Long Street Baths: A Historic Oasis in the Heart of Cape Town

The Long Street municipal pool first opened its doors in 1908, with the unique Turkish baths—still the only public facility of their kind in South Africa—added in 1927.  Victorian in style, complete with curved window hoods, oversized brass doorknobs, and Art Nouveau signage, the building now enjoys heritage protection as it sits tucked between a petrol station and a backpackers’ hostel. With its beautifully preserved architecture and rich multicultural legacy, this public bathhouse offers a refreshing escape from the city's fast pace.

The History

The Long Street Baths were originally built as a Turkish bathhouse and public swimming facility — designed to serve a diverse and fast-growing urban population. For the first eight decades after it opened, like many spaces in the city, the pool was off-limits to residents of the Bo-Kaap and to any Capetonians who were not white. Over the decades since, it has welcomed everyone from serious swimmers to artists, families, and locals simply seeking a quiet moment in the steam room.

Back in the 1960s, there was genuine discussion about tearing down the Long Street Baths. Growing traffic at the busy junction where Long Street meets Buitensingel, Orange, and Kloof had city planners looking for ways to relieve congestion—and demolition was on the table.

Fortunately, that didn’t happen, and the baths are still right where they were, and still used and loved by Capetonians from all walks of life. The mosaic-tiled Turkish baths, ornate ceilings, and historic layout have been carefully maintained, creating a space that feels like a time capsule in the middle of a modern city.
